Professor Lumír Hanuš, a native of the Czech Republic, is an expert analytic chemist and  leading authority in the field of medical cannabis research at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  With an M.S. and Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, and a Dr.Sc. in pharmaceutical chemistry, he  has been studying cannabis since the fall 1970. Following the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which  ushered in a democratic regime in the Czech Republic, he was invited to do research at the  Hebrew University, where – together with an American molecular pharmacologist – he first  described –the structure of anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter. His  award-winning research serves as the basis for much of what we know about the plant today.   More recently, Professor Hanuš was invited to help run The International Cannabis and  Cannabinoids Institute (ICCI) in Prague. The institute, which will operate closely with Charles  University in Prague, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Masaryk University in Brno, will  apply evidence based research combined with patient experience to continue to contribute to  the use of cannabis in the treatment of various diseases. Professor Hanuš has received multiple  awards and nominations for excellence in the science and his contributions to the field of  cannabis study and research.
